Fiberglass contamination and glass fiber related health concerns have gained attention in the mattress industry. So, does Avocado use fiberglass?
Avocado is one of the most popular sellers of natural and organic sleep solutions and furniture. The Avocado website sells mattresses, pillows, bedding, frames, foundations, as well as other furniture like nightstands, dressers, desks, chairs, and even beds for dogs!
I looked into Avocado, for possible fiberglass use, and was pleased to find no evidence of fiberglass being used in its flame barriers.
About Avocado Green Mattress
Founded in 2016, Avocado was born from the need for a truly non-toxic mattresses without the slew of unhealthy ingredients found in most beds.
Avocado is a B Corp certified company, and its mattresses are made by hand in California using ethically sourced domestic and imported materials.
Avocado Uses Organic Materials
Mattresses made by Avocado use Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified organic latex. The latex is made of rubber tree sap sourced from 40,000 hectare farms split between Guatemala and India.
The Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) certified organic wool used by Avocado is sourced from the Himachal Pradesh region of northern India, and process in a factory located in the town of Rampur near the Sutlej River.
There are many other certifications maintained by Avacado for its mattresses that show dedication to creating healthy sleep soltions, such as OEKO-Tex 100, eco-INSTITUT, and MADE SAFE.
Avocado Makes Fiberglass-Free Mattresses
With all the effort Avocado puts into being a safe and healthy mattress provider, it’s completely against its ethos to use fiberglass in its mattresses. Avocado even has a support page dedicated to answering whether it uses fiberglass or not.
Avocado’s Fiberglass statement:
“Avocado does not use fiberglass in any part of our Organic Certified Mattresses — including the covers or as a flame retardant — due to critical health and safety considerations.”

Flammability regulation test passes are achieved by Avocado through the use of either organic wool, graphite, or hydrated silica as a natural flame retardant.
Also, Avocado has a support page that transparently lists how each of its mattresses handle its flame retardant responsibilities.
Avocado’s Flame Retardant statement:
“Avocado mattresses are different. Our Green, Luxury Plush, and Latex mattresses use natural, GOTS-certified organic wool as a natural fire barrier. Our hybrid Vegan Mattress does not use wool — instead, we add natural graphite powder to the latex. And our Vegan Latex Mattress uses hydrated silica.”

Avocado Green Mattress makes fiberglass-free mattresses that mostly rely on organic wool as a flame barrier, vegan mattresses rely on graphite or hydrated silica.
Does Avocado Vegan Use Fiberglass?
There are rumors online that Avocado vegan products use fiberglass, but Avocado’s own Vegan Mattress page addresses fiberglass use directly by saying this:
“We infuse natural graphite with GOLS-certified organic latex as a fire barrier to protect your mattress. No wool, chemical fire retardant, or fiberglass is used.”

While shopping for his daughter’s first “big girl” bed in 2019, John learned about the hidden dangers of fiberglass in mattresses. Since then, he’s made it his mission to expose as much hidden fiberglass in mattresses as possible. His ultimate goal is federal regulations that ban fiberglass from being used in mattresses, or at least a law that requires it to be listed as a material on required tags.
