Dangerous fiberglass used in mattresses has gained attention in the last few years after numerous lawsuits and news coverage shined a spotlight on the issue. People reported a range of health issues like skin abrasions, eye irritation, sore throats, and heightened allergies. Some people even had their entire homes contaminated with fiberglass and had to pay thousands of dollars to have it cleaned.

Do Sleepy’s mattresses by Mattress Firm have fiberglass? Yes, they definitely do, but many popular mattress review websites will have you believe otherwise.! Mattresses made with no fiberglass are not that rare, but it’s easy to be fooled if you aren’t careful.

Popular Websites Report Sleepy’s by Mattress Firm as Fiberglass-Free

Sleepy’s used to be its own chain of brick-and-mortar mattress stores before Mattress Firm bought them out in 2015. Since then, all the Sleep’s stores were rebranded into Mattress Firm stores and the Sleepy’s brand name began being used for an exclusive line of mattresses only sold at Mattress Firm.

While searching online for information on Sleepy’s fiberglass use, make sure you are looking at Sleepy’s by Mattress Firm and not the Australian-based Sleepy’s brand.

“..don’t worry because sleepy’s mattress does not have fiberglass in their mattresses.” – SleepingDay.com

“According to our Sleepys mattress reviews, it seems that Sleepy’s mattresses are fiberglass-free.” -SleepAim.com

“Sleepy’s mattresses do not all contain fiberglass as a fire retardant.” -Best10Mattress.com

There are many other examples in search results where websites say something along the lines of “Mattress Firm hasn’t gotten back to us, but we don’t think Sleepy’s have fiberglass” which is almost as bad as flat-out saying Sleepy’s is fiberglass-free when they truly aren’t. Spreading misinformation that could pose a danger to peoples’ health is a serious problem that many mattress review websites seem to be okay with.

Mattress Firm Confirmed Fiberglass in Sleepy’s Mattresses

I was in contact with Mattress Firm via live chat support to inquire about fiberglass in their other exclusive mattress brand, Tulo. Mattress Firm told me that Tulo uses a fiberglass firesock as their fire barrier. Before ending the chat I decided to ask Mattress Firm if its other exclusive mattress brand, Sleepy’s, uses fiberglass. The Mattress Firm chat representative told me that Sleepy’s mattresses are made the same way as the Tulo line – presumably this means the inclusion of a fiberglass fire sock as the flame barrier as well.

Here’s what Mattress Firm had to say about Sleepy’s Fiberglass use:

“Tulo mattresses use a fiberglass fire sock for their fire barrier, which is a common and effective material for fire safety.. Tulo is exclusive to Mattress Firm and the Sleepy’s brand is also exclusive to Mattress Firm.. It will use similar to the Tulo brand and still be Certi-PUR certified as well.”

So, that’s that – Sleepy’s mattresses use the same type of flame barrier as Tulo mattresses and Tulo mattresses use fiberglass. Therefore, Sleepy’s mattresses use a fiberglass firesock to pass flammability tests.

Is it Even a Problem that Sleepy’s Uses Fiberglass?

In the past 3 years, there have been many news reports and videos posted on social media of peoples’ lives being severely impacted by fiberglass mattresses. People would have a hole made in their mattress cover by their kids, or a pet, and the fiberglass would start escaping the mattress and contaminating their homes. Fiberglass contamination can lead to mucous membrane irritation, skin rashes, bronchitis, and worsened asthma. Some mattresses don’t even need a rip in the cover for fiberglass to be expelled.

Dimming the lights and shining a flashlight around the mattress, and the immediate area will make loose fiberglass particles easily identifiable because they shimmer and sparkle.

Some people had fiberglass mattresses from brands that neglected to list fiberglass on the mattress tags. When there was a mess on the mattress cover and the people removed the covers to clean it, they inadvertently released the fiberglass all over their homes.

The least fortunate of people didn’t notice fiberglass until after washing the cover in their clothes washing machine, which contaminated the washer and clothing they’d wash afterward.
